Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when multiple of them floated into the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations affecting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and near the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
Since January, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a approach that remains especially affected by weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
