The megacity Wakes Up to Toxic Pollution Following Diwali

Tuesday brought citizens of this heavily contaminated metropolis were faced with breathing extremely polluted air that registered in the "critical" range.

Record-Breaking Pollution Levels

Several parts of the city showed an AQI exceeding 500, which translates to 10x the safe limit recommended by the World Health Organization.

Certain monitoring stations, concentrations of dangerous airborne particles soared to of 1,800, representing 15-20x exceeding healthy limits.

Firecracker Prohibition and New Policy Shifts

For the past four years, officials had maintained a comprehensive restriction on the sale and use of pyrotechnics during the Festival of Lights due to their significant contribution to the hazardous haze that blankets the capital as winter sets in.

Yet earlier this year, the recently formed city administration appealed to the supreme court to request a relaxation of the ban.

They proposed allowing "green crackers" – historically questioned by environmentalists as being only approximately one-third reduced emissions – as a balance between "cultural practices and ecological concerns".

Legal Decision and Implementation

To the disappointment of medical and ecological activists, judicial authorities approved the proposal, stipulating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be used during designated hours throughout the celebrations.

Throughout the festival evening, there was extensive disregard of the designated hours across the metropolis, with minimal enforcement regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the supposedly greener variety.

Several recording stations throughout the city showed air quality reaching highest levels around late evening to some of the worst levels observed during Diwali in at least the past three years.

Cross-Border Effects

The widespread use of fireworks during Diwali also triggered a blame game with bordering Pakistan, with officials in Pakistan's Punjab partly blaming declining pollution levels in the city of Lahore on pollutants originating in neighboring India following the celebrations.

Persistent Pollution Crisis

The dangerously high readings of air contamination in the city have remained as a major challenge for more than 15 years, with the situation showing no improvement.

Around Diwali, the levels of hazardous particulate matter in the environment has been found to shoot up to significantly exceeding the peak readings ever recorded in China's capital, which was previously considered as the planet's dirtiest city.

Various Contamination Sources

The situation in the city is attributed to a mix of different contributors including transportation pollution, airborne particles, building projects, waste incineration and haze from farm burning in neighbouring states of farming communities.

In these regions, agricultural workers illegally ignite agricultural waste to clear them quickly, creating hazardous smog that becomes contained over the capital as winter air arrives.

Public Health and Economic Consequences

Both financial and medical impact on the roughly thirty-three million residents residing in the metropolitan zone is enormous, according to multiple research.

This pollution results in high levels of neurological, cardiovascular and respiratory conditions, and can result in oncological diseases.

Environmental contamination is projected to be accounting for approximately 10k premature mortalities annually in the capital.
